About the Competition
AIA Fort Worth invites you to share your ideas for the emerging typology for urban housing called Cottage Communities. Cottage Communities can provide a lower‐cost solution to the need for affordable and subsidized housing in Tarrant County. Micro‐living has become a trend in diverse communities, but has only recently been introduced as a low‐cost, viable, quality‐of‐life‐enhancing alternative to homeless shelters. To begin to produce enough housing for an everexpanding population, we must begin to think more creatively about how we produce housing and what home means to our community. A cottage home provides individuals with their own private space in a planned community development and gives residents a place to call home within a shared community. This competition is an opportunity for architects and students to propose new solutions to Tarrant County’s affordable housing shortage by designing a Cottage Community in Fort Worth’s Near Southside neighborhood as a prototype for future development possibilities.
