Attention AIAFW Members: The September meeting of AIA Fort Worth is the Annual Business Meeting and Election of Chapter Officers & Directors for the upcoming year. Catalyst For Success: Paradigm Shift In Firm Structure
Operating an architectural firm requires a multitude of business skills and strategies in order to be successful in winning work, keeping staff employed and billable, making a profit, and doing it all repeatedly. Most architects are not trained in business management sufficiently to straddle both the role of architect and business operations leader.
According to AIA's 2022 Firm Survey Report, 49% of US firms are single market operations. 44% are multiple market operations. The remaining 7% is listed as "Other". This session explores what "other" could be - alternative formats for structuring a firm. An important part of being a successful entrepreneur is considering alternative and/or multiple ways to structure of the firm, for example, setting up a specialist firm within the larger firm, becoming a developer of projects that you also design, expanding service options to include Interior design or product design, opening additional locations, and more.
This session starts with an overview of existing alternative practice models and the advantages and downsides of each, and then discussion expands to integrate tools and strategies that make each work, and what the architect-entrepreneur will need to be mindful of as they choose a path.

Webinar: Leverage the Inflation Reduction Act to Accelerate Sustainable Projects
Join us for a webinar from allied member Brayn Consulting!

Free Webinar
Leverage the Inflation Reduction Act to Accelerate Sustainable Projects
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is designed for architects and their clients and will cover federal tax incentives for sustainable construction:
• Section 48 Renewable Energy Tax Credits,
• Section 179D Energy Efficient Commercial Building Deductions, and
• Section 45L Energy Efficient Residential Tax Credits.
The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provides new and expanded opportunities for these incentives to architects and their clients. This course will help architects leverage those opportunities to accelerate energy-efficient and renewable construction to help meet the AIA 2030 Commitment – making carbon neutral the design standard. 1LU
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Analyzing the Impact of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) on 48 Energy Credits, 179D, and 45L:
• The changes brought about by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to 179D, 45L, and 48 Energy Credits.
• Case studies with real examples of financial benefits.
• Guidance on the best strategies to leverage these incentives to accelerate energy-efficient and renewable construction.
2. Section 48 Renewable Energy Tax Credits:
• How multifamily, commercial, and even tax-exempt owners like schools, churches, tribal governments, and non-profits can use the incentive to help fund renewable and recoverable property.
• How the investment tax credit is calculated to pay for 30% to 70% of the renewable property cost.
• Learn how solar, geothermal, combined heat and power, and other technologies qualify for the credit and how transitions to the Section 48E Clean Energy Investment Tax Credit after 2024.
3. 179D Energy-Efficient Commercial Buildings Deduction:
How federal, state, local, and tribal governments, as well as tax-exempt building owners can allocate the tax incentive to architecture firms.
• Tax deductions are available to building owners for installing energy-efficient qualifying systems.
Deduction increases from $1.80/sf to $5.00/sf, and qualifications change over time.
4. 45L Energy Efficient Residential Credits:
• New energy-efficient requirements for multifamily developers and home builders to get a tax credit of $2,500 to $5,000 per unit or home.
• Expanded credit eligibility for multifamily and mixed-use developers.
• The requirements to meet DOE Energy Star and Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH) programs.

Pella Showroom Tour with Ibanez Shaw Architecture (1LU)
Join us for a tour of this this 2023 AIAFW Design Award Winner
The showroom was formed from two existing demised spaces in a multi-tenant retail building. A deep, sloped steel building frame (concealed in the existing demising wall) and an existing stair posed significant barriers to accommodating the large custom, owner-supplied display system required for the project. The building structure was incorporated into the design and used along with a reconfigured stair to define an authentic experience with new expressions of materiality.

Discovery Studio Tour at Wings of Hope (1.5 HSW)
Wings of Hope Equitherapy is a non-profit organization which partners horses with children and adults who have disabilities and challenges. Their mission is to provide hope, healing and discovery to their clients.
The architect, Lyn Flynn, AIA was asked to design a Discovery Studio on the Wings of Hope campus to serve as an inclusive classroom, art studio, and gathering space. The spirit of the Studio is to promote wellness through learning, creating and interacting with nature and horses. While the large windows bring in natural light and views to the surrounding heavily-treed property, the overhead door opens to allow small ponies into the studio, which supports the mission of discovery and healing.
The site for the studio was chosen based on proximity to an existing septic system and natural drainage patterns on the property. In addition, the location of the studio near the existing arena and chapel creates a shared courtyard space for clients to enjoy. The triangular shaped site is located at a fork in the road near the entrance to the Wings of Hope property. This helped inform the building shape and created an opportunity for the Discovery Studio to be the first building guests see as they enter the campus. The studio's "front porch" was designed to be dynamic and welcoming to clients and guests.
The building's exterior and interior materials are low maintenance and were selected to relate to other structures on the campus. The corrugated metal siding and exposed roof structure relate to the arena and horse stables. In contrast, the smooth painted siding is a nod to the adjacent chapel building. The bold colors used on the entry doors and interior spaces complement the dynamic nature of the structure.

Across Tarrant County, rents are rising. Neighborhoods are changing. Our cities are adding jobs faster than they are building housing. As higher-income residents move in, vulnerable residents are pushed out, resulting in an increase in homelessness and evictions. As our region continues to grow, how can leaders tackle affordable housing needs and limit the displacement of residents?
The moderator for this challenging conversation is Dennis Chiessa, a professor of architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington. Panelists include:
Mike Brennan, President of Near Southside Inc.
Joel Burns, former Fort Worth City Council member
Shawn Lassiter, executive director of BRAVE/R Together
Stacy Marshall, President and CEO of Southeast Fort Worth Inc.

About Transform 1012:
Recipient of a Texas Society of Architects 2023 ‘Citation of Honor’ Award, Transform 1012 is attempting to occupy the 1924 Ku Klux Klan Auditorium at 1012 North Main; occupied for over 5 decades as the Ellis Pecan Warehouse. To be known as The Fred Rouse Center for Arts and Community Healing, multiple diverse entities – local, state and national - are part of the project which is centered on the idea of love, compassion, diversity and acceptance transforming a structure once created and fixated on the opposite. Multiple grants from across the country are funding the effort and the architect selection process is underway currently.
